Application Walkthrough

The MarinaGuide has a pretty simple structure.

On startup you will see the loading page while the guide is downloading details on any marinas that have been updated since the last update. Aim of this is, to have the same data available in the app as it is in the database of www.marina-guide.net The load is an optimised load that only loads the marina name, location and last change time. All other details are loaded on demand to reduce network use. When the update is complete, or if you have no network connection, click on 'Marinas' to proceed to the Marina List.

The Marina list is sorted alphabetically. The ordering may change depending on your language, as we use the localised marina name in sorting.

If you have location information enabled, then you have the choice of filtering by distance from your current location as well as by name. Not all iphones can get location when they're outside cellular coverage, so this may not show up, even though you have location information enabled. The range choices will stay grey until your location updates.

The load data screen, accessed from the button in the Marinas screen, allows you to reload the internal database or load all data.

Reloading the internal database if provided in case the internal database gets corrupted, in general, it shouldn't be necessary to use this unless a database update is interrupted.

Loading all data loads all information, maps and comments for all the marinas. This is best done on a fast and free network connection. If you have no network connection, you will normally only be able to see data for marinas you've previously visited. Loading all data ensures that you have data and maps for all marinas.

Tapping on a marina in the marina list takes you to the marina details page. This includes ratings, the approach chart, the facilities list, contact details and viewing and editing individual comments.

The ratings screen shows an overall view of the ratings for the marina.

In the individual comments screen you can either view an existing comment. If you're adding a new comment, moving your finger over the individual facility ratings sets the rating. Your comment and rating will be synchronized with the database on www.marina-guide.net, in order to help other people as well.

Common Problems

As yet, we don't know of any.

The most likely source of problems is a corrupted database. See “load data” to fix this problem.

FAQ

None yet, but here are some questions that might be frequently asked.

Question:

Why isn't there a free version, so people can try before they buy?

Answer:

The marina related content is pretty much the same as the website, which is ad-supported, so you can see the range of content there. The screenshots cover the presentation.

Question:

Isn't this a bit pricy?

Answer:

The market is pretty small, and with the network caching and integration with the website, this isn't a trivial application. I have only seen one competitor, and their price is similar, without any local caching, or the possibility to submit reviews. If you're roaming, and with yachting, you often are; the bandwidth costs will soon cover the cost of the app.

Question:

Which marinas does the app include?

Answer:

For an accurate answer, check out the Marina Guide website: www.marina-guide.net ( or .de). The quick answer is most of the Baltic, Dutch, German and UK marinas, with France and Portugal next on the agenda.
